Description
The site for the Barolo Gattera is located lower down the slope, near the Castiglione Falletto border, where there is a greater limestone influence. This vineyard has the estate’s oldest vines, which were planted in 1950. Alessandro tends to use a proportion of whole bunches here, and this year has opted to reduce the proportion of new oak a little. The fine-grained tannins of the vintage are evident as the limestone gives more structure, but the palate evolves into something creamier, with strawberry notes and a rich, almost savoury yet sunny finish.

Walter Speller 17.5/20
Lustrous and just mid ruby. Closed and brooding on the nose, with a hint of black pepper. Gorgeous and fresh on the palate but very backward and just hinting at red currant and raspberry. Firm but attractive tannins add real chew to the whole. The oak is practically indiscernible. Very slow to come out, elegant and complex but patience is needed.

Gattera, the well known MGA overlooked by the landmark cedar of Lebanon tree, between La Morra and Castiglione Falletto, typically has notes of earth, chocolate and truffle, and which are evident here, allied to grainy tannins and refreshing acidity. The wine is lighter in body with a stylish character, mostly floral and red fruited.

The 2019 Barolo Gattera is a powerful, broad wine. Even in the new style favored by Veglio today, the Gattera shows its natural breath along with a decidedly dark expression of La Morra. Sweet black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and mocha all meld together effortlessly. The Gattera offers lovely upfront appeal married to the classicism of the year. That's a pretty appealing combination in my book.
