2019 Barolo, Mauro Veglio, Piedmont, Italy

Description

Thanks to the new vineyards in Serralunga, Mauro Veglio’s Barolo Classico now incorporates fruit from lower vines in the Manocino and Lirano vineyards. The blend is now 15% from Serralunga, 35% from Gattera, and 25% each from Castelletto and Arborina. Alessandro likes the tannin structure that comes from using 15% new oak barriques. The addition of the Serralunga element has made the tannins even more complex, and given the wine more structure. These tannins wrap themselves around a lovely sweet core of fruit.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17/20

Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Sweet raspberry fruit with hints of integrated oak. Pretty, seductive and with a peppery tingle. Fresh raspberry fruit palate that is still a little austere and with firm grainy tannins. The finish is long and balanced.

The 2019 Barolo is bright, gracious and effusive, with lovely aromatic presence and fine balance. Sweet dried cherry, leather, dried herbs and tobacco all grace this tasty, entry-level offering from Veglio. The 2019 is an absolute delight that just gets better with time in the glass. Like all the wines here now, the straight Barolo is beautifully understated in feel.

About this wine

Barolo

Barolo

Piedmont's most famous wine DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), Barolo is renowned for producing Italy's finest reds from 100 percent Nebbiolo. The Barolo appellation was formalised in 1966 at around 1,700 hectares, and has an exceptional terroir with almost every village perched on its own hill. The climate is continental, with an extended summer and autumn enabling the fickle Nebbiolo to achieve perfect ripeness.
