2019 Barolo, Brunate, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy

Description

Brunate is one of the region’s greatest vineyards thanks to its altitude, southern exposure and complex soils. Only Manuel’s oldest vines, his top wine, were selected for this. Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo traditional submerged cap fermentation for 54 days—two years in botti grande under the watchtower and another year in bottle pre-release.

The nose is a complex whirl of black cherry, chinoto, mentholated oils and balsamic. The palate is gently beginning to show its potential, detailed and chiselled, with everything the nose promises, topped with an orange peel-raspberry tea finish. This is truly stunning, but needs a few years to show its true greatness.

Critics reviews

Audrey Frick 93/100

Medium brick red in hue, the 2019 Barolo Brunate Docg is spicier, with more forward notes of liquorice, tea leaf, dried cranberries, irony earth, and blood orange. It has a more chiselled structure while staying light on its feet, with a clean finish, good, even length, and evenly balanced acidity. It’s more noble and retains very nice purity and freshness.

Kerin O'Keefe 95/100

Star anise, blue flower, cedar and ripe forest berry are just some of the aromas that take shape on Marcarini’s radiant 2019 Brunate. All about finesse and structure, the palate is still young and youthfully austere, offering juicy red cherry, pomegranate, licorice and tobacco before a black tea finish. Firm, fine-grained tannins provide support while fresh acidity keeps it energized.

This is showing notes of walnut husk, dried oranges, sage, green strawberries and star anise. Some ground tea leaves. It’s full-bodied with tannins that are a little chalky in nature. Broad, muscular and firm finish.
