2018 Brunello di Montalcino, Poggio di Sotto, Tuscany, Italy

Description

A vintage with a cooler summer and ample rain, this offers freshness and elegance befitting the philosophy of this famous fattoria. A selection of the estate’s oldest vines, natural fermentation was carried out in traditional large Slovenian oak, with 40 days of infusion on skins, followed by 33 months in botti and three months in cement, before bottling in November 2021.

It has a gleaming nose of kirsch, sage and smoky balsamic. The palate is composed, energetic and refined, with the soft pulp of crushed raspberry, saline rocky details, wild herbs and peach skin. The tannins are very fine, iron-clad but near approachable. This is long, savoury and fiercely mineral on finish.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17.5/20

Lustrous ruby. Savoury and with hints of raw meat, and still quite embryonic and reductive. Needs lots of aeration to show gorgeous raspberry hints. On the palate, lush fruit with long, polished, yet chewy tannins. Perfumed, sweet raspberry fruit follows through the finish. You get all of this, but only if you open the bottle literally hours earlier.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino captivates, opening slowly with an exotic array of sweet spices, cedar shavings, ashen stone, mint and hints of sage. It’s luxuriously soft in texture, silky and refined, with depths of balsamic-tinged cherries accelerated by vibrant acidity and a hint of sour citrus that adds contrast.

This finishes with impressive structure for the vintage, still lively yet classically dry, leaving nuances of tart berries offset by a burst of inner sweetness that punctuates quite well. This was a very difficult vintage with a massive amount of rain in August that made vineyard work very difficult, but also extremely important.

That said, the team at Poggio did a fantastic job finding balance. Do make sure to give the 2018 a good amount of time, as I followed this for three days, through which it only got better and better.

About this wine

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.
