2018 Barolo, Brunate, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy

Description

One of 2018’s most successful wines, Brunate stems from one of the region’s greatest vineyards thanks to its altitude, southernly exposure and complex soils. Only Manuel’s oldest vines are selected, and fruit undergoes traditional submerged cap fermentation, before spending two years in botti grande under the watchtower, and an additional year in bottle pre-release. The nose bounces with roasted fig, orange blossom and dried herb, while the palate is deep and richly flavoured. The wine was, welcomely, softened by the vintage conditions. This is ethereal, high-toned, and long.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17.5/20

La Morra. Just mid-ruby. Ethereal raspberry-fruit nose with hints of exotic spice and camphor. Polished yet very slow to open up. Monolithic yet elegant at the same time. The fantastic balance only shows itself to the full on the finish—a triumph for the vintage.

Antonio Galloni 93/100

The 2018 Barolo Brunate is a powerful, broad wine packed with deeply-pitched spice and balsamic notes that are so typical of this site. Dark cherry/plum fruit, leather, spice, menthol, incense and dried herbs fill out the layers. There's plenty of Brunate intensity and volume, but the 2018 should drink well with just a few years in bottle.

Notes of sweet spices, orange peel, red cherries, raspberries and red flowers. Medium-bodied with slightly chewy but ripe tannins framing the vivid red fruit core. Lingering finish.
