2017 Beaune, Cent Vignes, 1er Cru, Benjamin Leroux, Burgundy

Description

Benjamin Leroux is perhaps best known as a négociant, but he now owns a significant proportion of his own vineyards. He bought fruit from this 0.5-hectare parcel until eventually buying the land in 2021. The soil is light and sandy with brown gravel, giving a perfumed and pretty wine that has a light and delicate structure. Five barrels were made in 2017. The nose is spicy with open red-berry fruit, with floral aromas that follow through onto the palate. This is a pretty, pure and transparent expression of Beaune.

Critics reviews

Julia Harding MW 16.5/20

Not made in 2016 because of frost, like Hauts Jarrons. From tank. Racked mid November, a little later than usual.

Fragrant and lightly floral tart red fruits. Tight and juicy and with a fine driving freshness, supple and persistent.

The 2017 Beaune Les Cent-Vignes 1er Cru has a bright bouquet of red cherries, bergamot aromas, and a touch of espresso in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and quite saline in the mouth, leading to a sappy, slightly chalky-textured finish. Fine.

Pretty but lightish colour, a gentle red fruit nose, no great weight to this, with good acidity behind. A lighter, sandy Beaune though still some attractive perfume behind.

Firm reduction presently overshadows the underlying fruit. Otherwise the supple, round and succulent medium weight flavors are tender and seductive while exhibiting a touch of youthful austerity the more complex and better balanced finish.

Drink from 2023 onward.
