Description
One of the true greats of Piedmont and masters of Nebbiolo, the Gaja family has been vine-growing in the Langhe area of Piedmont for 150 years. Their impact on the Fine Wine world started with Angelo, who took over in 1970 and started making Nebbiolo in a more modern style. He pioneered the use of barriques, planted non-indigenous varieties, and, for some of his range, stepped outside of the DOCG, in no way compromising quality. Gaja is all about family, with Gaia (Angelo’s daughter) now at the helm, supported by her younger brother Giovanni. Together, they are driving Gaja towards a more refined approach, evident in the quality of the wines.
Tasting note
Extremely perfumed and beautiful, offering rose-petal and lavender aromas with some tar to the ripe cherries. Some spice, such as nutmeg, as well as light hazelnut. Fresh. Full-bodied, very tight and compact with firmness and wonderful length and focus. There is a consistent drive through the centre of the wine.
