2017 Barolo, Brunate, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy

Description

This wine is officially entitled to Riserva status due to its extended ageing in bottle, but it’s not labelled as such. It’s fabulously intense, compact and heady with the notes of a dry vintage: sage, white pepper, some mint, tobacco and liquorice. This isn’t a typical La Morra, but it’s from a great vineyard, with the svelte lines of the commune.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17++/20

La Morra. Just mid-ruby with orange tinges. Balsamic nose with great lift. Aromatic cherry and raspberry coulis with an undertow of nutmeg. Mouth-filling, layered sour-sweet cherry fruit with bags and bags of chewy tannins. Long, precise and deep but far from ready.

The 2017 Barolo Brunate shows the signatures of a warm, dry vintage in its slightly forward profile. Dried cherry, cedar, spice, tobacco and dried flowers are all nicely mellowed by the conditions of the year. There is good freshness, but I would not push my luck on aging. The 2017 is already pretty much ready to go.

This is a powerful red with a full body and lots of dried fruit, walnuts, smoke and dried flowers. Asphalt and tar, too. It’s full and very layered with round, chewy tannins and a rich finish. Needs time to soften and open.

Try after 2024

Licorice, new leather and crushed blue flower aromas form the nose. The licorice note segues over to the firm, elegantly structured palate along with dried cherry, raspberry compote, truffle and white pepper. Polished tannins provide support.
