Tasting note

Neighbouring Tenuta San Guido’s Sassicaia vineyards, but by no means in its shadow, Castello di Bolgheri continues to produce one of the best Cabernet expressions on the Tuscan coast. This is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Cabernet Franc. The nose is a heady tonic of anise, tobacco and clove, oozing with ripe cassis.

Unexpectedly a little linear on the first sip, before long it opens up, with phenomenal concentration. This is so well defined: the dark plums, the liquorice, the sweet mocha, the wet gravel on the finish all dance in harmony across the palate. Undoubtedly, this is the best vintage of Castello di Bolgheri I have ever tasted.

A new DOC in the coastal Maremma region, Bolgheri first rose to prominence during the 1970s with the emergence of the so-called Super Tuscan wines like Ornellaia and Sassicaia. Having won universal acclaim and selling for unprecedented prices, the authorities relented and awarded Bolgheri its own DOC. The actions of the Super Tuscans inspired a generation in Italy, even if some of the wines here have lost a little of their lustre since.
