2016 Barolo, Monprivato Cà d'Morissio, Riserva, Mascarello Giuseppe & Figlio, Piedmont, Italy

Description

The Cà d’Morissio project started in 1993 to express the best characteristics of Nebbiolo from the famed Monprivato vineyard when the vintage conditions are most favourable. The Michèt clone of Nebbiolo provides the fruit for this wine, which is only planted in a specific parcel of the Monprivato vineyard. The 2016 marks only the 13th release since its inception.

The 2016 Riserva is utterly beguiling. As we know with 2016 Barolo, the vintage is one of immense quality, but this really was a wine worth waiting for. It is a tremendously well-balanced and structured Barolo, with dark cherries, hibiscus, and cigar box being the primary flavours that come to mind. An undercurrent of vanilla, rose petal, and lavender lingers on the finish. That being said, I truly believe this is a Barolo that will only come into its own in 6 or 7 years from now.

The last time we saw this wine was in 2014; I remember that vintage as magical. The Giuseppe Mascarello 2016 Barolo Monprivato Riserva Cà d’Morissio is the estate’s benchmark wine. Thanks to this epic growing season, we have a clear window into the excellence of Castiglione Falletto, where Monprivato is located, and the current state of affairs at this historic winery.

I found this wine to be quite beautiful and profound, with dried fruit, cassis, earthy tones and pressed violet. It is also quite generous in terms of mouthfeel, with integrated tannins that are finely woven with hints of dried mint and bitter plum. The vineyards were planted with a massal selection of Mascarello family vines. The wine is persistent, especially at the back end of the palate, showing firm structure and power.
