2016 Château Pédesclaux, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Description

Château Pédesclaux is a Classified Growth with neighbours including Mouton Rothschild and Pontet-Canet, yet it flies a little under the radar. But this is a smart estate, and it has benefited immensely from investment by Jacky Lorenzetti, owner since 2009.

It’s still early days for this 2016, though it’s worth broaching now if you appreciate the joy of youthful Bordeaux. It’s got beautiful aromas of ripe, concentrated blackcurrant and blueberry fruit along with menthol and violet. Behind, there’s some tobacco spice and sandalwood. In the mouth, it’s silky and juicy – and gentler than you might expect for a top-vintage Pauillac at this age. There’s a lively line of refreshing acidity, too, making it a great match for hearty winter stews.

Critics reviews

Bright deep crimson. Creamy texture. Obviously lots of work has gone into this. Very gentle extraction. Rewarding drink though just a suggestion of modern winemaking rather than overbearing vineyard influence. Drink 2024-2036.

The 2016 Pedesclaux is composed of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. It aged for 18 months in 60% new and 40% one-year-old French oak. It has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of crushed red and black currants and blackberries with cigar box, new leather, pencil lead and crushed rocks. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant, fresh and lively with loads of mineral nuances and a lovely earthy finish. Around 15,000 cases produced.

About this wine

Pauillac

Pauillac

The aristocrat of the Médoc boasts 75 percent of the region’s First Growths, with Grand Cru Classés representing 84 percent of production. Pauillac's First Growths each have their own unique characteristics: Ch. Lafite Rothschild produces the region’s most aromatically-complex and subtly-flavoured wine, while – with its high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon – Ch. Mouton Rothschild can produce a decadently rich, fleshy and exotic wine.
