2015 Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Sérafin Père & Fils, Burgundy

Description

A fresh, clear purple colour, this wine has bright, medium red fruit on the nose with some light coffee notes. These aren’t replicated on the palate, where the fruit is juicy and delicious, actually quite elegant. This is a lovely balanced Gevrey-Chambertin for the medium term. Drink 2020-2026.
Jasper Morris MW, Wine Buyer

Christian Sérafin’s niece Frédérique follows very much in her uncle’s footsteps, using the same vinification and maturing principles as before, though possibly with a fractionally lighter touch. She is also reviewing the management of the soil in the vineyards to encourage more microbial life. They made what turned out to be the excellent decision not to do any leaf plucking in 2015, thus avoiding any burning of the grapes and so maintaining a respectable yield.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 88-91/100
A brooding and sullen nose speaks of various dark berries, pungent earth and plenty of sauvage character. There is good freshness and plenty of energy to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a surprisingly refined mouth feel yet there is a certain muscularity on the youthfully austere but not really rustic finale.

About this wine

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest wine-producing village in Burgundy’s Côte d'Or. Located in the far north of the Côtes de Nuits, the classic style is typically deeper in colour, firmer in body and more tannic in structure than most red Burgundy. While in the past there have been myriad underperformers here, the overall quality is now higher than ever and the best can develop into the most complete and long-lived Pinot Noir in the world.
