2015 Baron de Brane, Margaux, Bordeaux

Description

This is the second wine of the illustrious Château Brane-Cantenac in Margaux. From the excellent 2015 vintage, it has benefited from additional bottle age. The nose needs a little coaxing, but with some air it opens up to a wonderful bouquet of cherry and cassis, with hints of pencil-shaving. The palate is medium bodied and finely poised, with a darker cherry note following on from the nose. The fine tannins give this wine a certain gravitas and tension – a seriousness that indicates this is a Claret to enjoy with food. Drink now to 2026.

Critics reviews

Jancis Robinson MW 16.5+/20

Tasted blind. Very juicy and vibrant with lots of sweet fruit. Vivacity defined.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2019)
Neal Martin 90/100

The 2015 Baron de Brane has one of the more flamboyant Margaux bouquets, boasting precocious red cherry, crushed strawberry and cedar aromas, all very cohesive and displaying good vigor. The fresh, tensile palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, offering dark cherries, bay leaf and cedar toward the persistent finish. This is much better than the bottle opened at the vertical a few months earlier. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

About this wine

Margaux

Margaux

If Pauillac is the bastion of ‘traditional’ Red Bordeaux, Margaux represents its other facet in producing wines that are some of the region’s most sensual and alluring. The largest commune in the Médoc, it encompasses the communes of Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labaude, in addition to the village of Margaux itself. Its finest examples are paragons of refinement and subtlety which have few parallels in Bordeaux.
