2014 Charmes-Chambertin, Grand Cru, Camille Giroud, Burgundy

Description

David’s deft hand has produced an elegant Charmes-Chambertin, which is very prettily perfumed and has fine raspberry fruit. Everything is as it should be structurally, with neither acidity nor tannins impeding the fruit’s succulence; this has an agreeably persistent finish. Tasting with David Croix at Camille Giroud is always a pleasure, especially this year, as the range 2014s is delicious. David feels the wines are about drinkability and balance rather than exceptional power. His theory is that the great start to the growing season kept the vines healthy through the cool, damp summer.

From Charmes proper.

A discreet application of wood frames elegant if slightly earthy red currant aromas that also display a sauvage note, but in this case, it's much more subtle than that of the Clos du Roi. I very much like the detail and appealing texture of the delicious and caressing medium-weight flavours that deliver good length on the balanced finale. This isn't nearly as concentrated as the best of these grands crus, but it is undeniably pretty.

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin is open, sleek and seductive. Silky tannins frame a ripe, generous core of fruit. This is a typical 2009 Charmes, long on the fruit but lacking a touch of verve that might otherwise elevate it. Dried flowers and red berries linger on the finish. This is a true Charmes sourced from the upper portion of that vineyard.

Real Charmes from a parcel against the Route des Grands Crus, just below Chambertin.

Medium-dark red. Enticing scents of redcurrant, flowers, coffee and spicy oak. Intense and nicely filled in, displaying noteworthy energy to the flavors of dark berries, liquorice and herbs. Conveys an impression of slow ripening under cool conditions. It finishes with fine-grained tannins and lovely lingering perfume. A distinctly delicate, aromatic style of Charmes-Chambertin, made entirely from destemmed fruit.

Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy, and is also the name of the associated AOC of the wines produced from it.
