Hambledon, Blanc de Blancs, Brut, Hampshire, England

Description

Aromas of brioche, pretzel and creamy apple unfold with richness and charm. The palate is broad and bold, with layers of custard tart, yeasty depth and zesty citrus. Vigorous and invigorating, with a long and flavourful finish.

This wine was awarded a Gold Medal and 96 points at the WineGB Awards 2025.

Tasting note

This near-vintage wine (95% from 2018) is very refined, with extended lees contact and 4 g/L dosage offering a balanced structure where laser focus and texture combine. The chalk soils - rich in Belemnite and matching those found in Champagne's Côte de Blancs - offer a distinctive mineral backbone that enhances its crisp acidity and lends a subtle, chalky precision to the finish, resulting in an elegant, integrated profile. This is a terrific effort here from a great English vintage that I have no doubt will stump a few seasoned blind tasters.

Critics reviews

Sylvia Wu 92/100

The Blanc de Blancs is a new addition to Hambledon Vineyard's portfolio. Based on the highly regarded 2018 vintage and sourced from the south-facing Windmill Down vineyards on belemnite chalk, the NV release was aged on lees for four years. Sourdough, citrus, and yellow apple on the nose. Brioche and a linear palate of lemon sorbet and citrus zest. White spices add flares to the savoury notes. Bright, with nutty, autolytic depth on the finish.
