Amarás Logia, Madrecuishe, Mezcal Ancestral, Oaxaca, Mexico (43%)

The Mezcal Amaras Logia Madrecuishe is a special Mezcal, produced using the slightly more unusual Agave karwinskii; a species of the plant easily identifiable next to its more famous cousin the Blue Weber by its height and traditionally used in the production of the finest Mezcal. The nose is bursting with citrus, with a touch of waxed lemons and grapefruit pith. The nose further unfurls into notes of freshly polished oak, cacao nib and bundles of spices.

The palate is creamy with an initial vanilla character that develops into quite juicy orchard fruit. It’s no wallflower, there is lots of intensity to the palate with the spice from the nose carrying through but its superbly balanced with the richness of the spirit. Cracked pink pepper corns and some delicate smoked meat notes, with some salinity, would really appeal to peated Scotch drinkers, I think. There is a sweetness too. All this complexity and intensity is combined expertly in a finish than lasts for many minutes
