Teeling, 21-Year-Old, Rising Reserve, Single Malt Whiskey, Ireland (46%)

Irish whiskey, as seen through the lens of Teeling Distillery, continues to go from strength to strength, especially when they fashion spirits of such elegance as this 21-year-old. After 16 years in ex-Bourbon barrels, this whiskey is finished in the exceedingly rare Portuguese White Port cask, Carcavelos. The influence of this is striking. Tropical flavours with a subtle framework of caramel sweetness lead on this whiskey, with green apples and banana bread aromas.

There’s a huge amount of energy and vibrancy on the palate. Citrus fruit spice with delicate tannins leaves your mouth fuzzy and warm, and a long finish punctuated by passionfruit adds joy and intrigue. For me, the balance of this whiskey is the most impressive thing and worth experiencing for yourself.
