Champagne Pierre Peters, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru, Extra Brut

Description

The loquacious and extremely likeable Rodolphe Péters of Champagne Pierre Péters is one of the most highly respected growers in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, where 12 of his 17 hectares are located. The style of Le Mesnil Champagnes focuses on mineral power and capacity to age. Péters is the master of this art, taming the steely acidity of the wines but in no way diminishing their inherent power and potential to develop.

Pierre Peters’ Extra Brut is far from foursquare from four parcels in four villages, stretching its modest two grams of residual sugar into a symphony of stone fruit and flowers. The wine is incredibly complex; the putative austerity of an Extra Brut is all but forgotten in this maze of flavours, where one is just as likely to fall upon liquorice and cinnamon as the more usual descriptors of plums and other orchard fruit.

Critics reviews

Jancis Robinson MW 16.5/20

Light, transparent nose. Very readable and transparent wine. Lifted with an impact that builds on the finish but is almost unnoticeable on the nose initially. So, so different from the Moëts just tasted! This is a sort of Chablis of Champagnebut is not uncomfortably dry and tart with a light yeastiness on the finish. There's something distinctly floral about it. Even pretty. Though it's not cheap.

Based on the 2019 vintage and disgorged with only two grams per liter dosage, Péters's NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru offers up attractive aromas of sweet stone fruits, freshly baked bread, honeycomb and citrus zest. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and incisive, its unusual concentration and persistence are testimony to the quality of the base vintage.

75% 2019 vintage and 25% perpetual reserve. 2g/L dosage.

A beautifully balanced wine with sliced fresh and cooked apple with hints of cream and some bread dough and brioche. Medium-bodied with a lovely creamy texture. Beautiful balance.
