Tolpuddle Vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, home to world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tolpuddle Vineyard, founded in 1988 and revitalised in 2012 by cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith AM MW, has quickly become one of Tasmania’s most admired wine estates. Its name honours the Tolpuddle Martyrs, English convicts transported to Tasmania for forming an agricultural union, with their leader George Loveless once working the very land now under vine.

From martyrs to modern mastery

The vineyard’s history is inseparable from its sense of place. What began as a promising site in the Coal River Valley was transformed under Shaw and Smith’s stewardship into a rare precision and character producer. Their vision, coupled with Tasmania’s cool, sunny climate, has allowed Tolpuddle to showcase the region’s potential on the world stage.

Wines of precision

First released in 2013, the wines have earned swift acclaim and are now regarded among Australia’s finest. The Chardonnay is taut and mineral, with chiselled elegance, while the Pinot Noir is pure and finely structured. Together, they capture the clarity and finesse that define Tasmania’s best expressions.
