Felton Road

Felton Road is a celebrated winery in Central Otago – the world’s southernmost wine region, located on New Zealand’s South Island. The property is famed for its high-quality Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with many of the most sought-after bottlings coming from single vineyards or single sites (in the case of the Block wines). Wine critic Robert Parker wrote that Felton Road’s inaugural 1997 Pinot Noirs “could be inserted as a ringer in a blind tasting of Grand Cru red Burgundy”.

The history of Felton Road

Felton Road’s first vines were planted in 1992 by founder Stewart Elms, a hotelier-turned-blackcurrant farmer. The estate takes its name from Felton Road, a stretch of road running nearby through Bannockburn, an old mining town. Since 2000, the winery has been led by British-born Nigel Greening.

The business is run with a zero-growth strategy, where the size of the vineyard and volume of production are deliberately kept stable over time. By 2006, the estate covered some 30 hectares of vines across vineyards including Calvert, Macmuir, The Elms and Cornish Point. Today, it’s around 34 hectares, with about 32 planted at any one time. Winemaker Blair Walter has made every vintage so far.
