A legacy rebuilt in Panzano
In the hills just south of Panzano, Fontodi occupies 90 hectares of prime vineyards within the Conca d’Oro—a natural amphitheatre prized for its optimal sunlight exposure and marl-rich soils. When Domiziano and Dino Manetti acquired the estate in 1968, it was in disrepair. Over the following decades, they replanted the vineyards and modernised the cellar, laying the foundation for a remarkable revival. Today, the estate is run by the next generation—Marco and Giovanni Manetti—with winemaking led by the esteemed Franco Bernabei.
Benchmark wines
Fontodi’s commitment to organic viticulture and low-intervention winemaking has earned it recognition as a benchmark producer in Chianti Classico. The estate produces a range of wines that reflect both innovation and tradition:
Chianti Classico: A classic blend of Sangiovese and Canaiolo, aged in large oak casks for freshness and balance.
Chianti Classico Riserva: This wine incorporates a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and is partially aged in French barriques, adding complexity and structure.
Flaccianello della Pieve: Fontodi’s flagship wine, made from 100% Sangiovese grown in the estate’s top parcels. Aged in French oak, it combines richness, elegance and a true sense of place. It was first produced in the 1980s and helped redefine what Tuscan Sangiovese could achieve.
