Origins and characteristics

Viura is the most widely planted white grape in Rioja. It thrives in the region’s climate, though growers must guard against diseases such as downy mildew and grey rot. Known for its generous yields, the grape has long been a cornerstone of Rioja’s winemaking tradition.

Blending and winemaking

Traditionally, Rioja’s white wines feature Viura blended with a touch of Malvasia (around 5%), lending a classic style. In Rioja Alavesa, Viura even plays a role in red blends, paired with Tempranillo to craft refined, age-worthy wines. Viura can produce wines of restrained character on its own. But in the hands of skilled winemakers, its natural aromatics shine through, and oak maturation enhances texture and depth without dominating the palate.
