2021 Moulin-à-Vent, Olivier Merlin, Beaujolais

Description

The Merlins’ La Rochelle vineyard is a 0.95-hectare parcel high above the moulin at almost 300 metres’ altitude. This wine is drawn exclusively from those vines at the top of the plot, which give the most intense, spicy expression, this year also with the sapid crunch of the vintage.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 91/100

100% whole clusters

A notably more complex nose combines cool notes of various red berries with those of pepper, floral and earth. There is much better vibrancy and volume to the succulent yet powerful medium-bodied flavours that exhibit fine depth and persistence on the robust and borderline rustic finale. Patience suggested.

About this wine

Beaujolais

Beaujolais

Beaujolais is almost entirely planted with the Gamay grape and produces mostly red wines. Around 70 million litres of Beaujolais are produced each year, or two-and-a-half times the entire wine production of the rest of Burgundy. More than half of this is sold as Beaujolais Nouveau, although an Aladdin's trove of gloriously satisfying wines exist amongst the 10 named village crus that occupy a 15-mile strip of granite hills to the north.
