2022 Gevrey-Chambertin, En Champs, Benjamin Leroux, Burgundy

Description

New this year, Benjamin has separated out his top Gevrey-Chambertin single vineyard and bottled it individually. En Champs is ideally located on the slope, beneath the Premier Cru Champeaux. The nose is more serious and brooding than Benjamin’s main bottling, with spicy red fruit, a creamy mid-palate and limestone tannins that provide a long, satisfying and saline finish.

Critics reviews

Jasper Morris MW 91-93/100

Consistently the most interesting of the Brochon side options, chez Benjamin, En Champs this year has been given its own cuvée, amounting to five barrels. It is a little headier, with richer dark red fruit and an extra tannin or two, so it will take longer.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs is the first release after being blended into the Village Cru for a couple of vintages. It has a perfumed nose, pure Pinoté with energy and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and good concentration whilst retaining admirable elegance. There’s a dab of pepperiness on the finish guided by the 30% whole bunches. Excellent.

This deeply-coloured wine has an enchanting perfume of blackberries and violets with an edge of spice. The texture is firm and tannicclassic Gevreywith a freshness that carries it to a long finish. The grapes come north of the Combe de Lavaux, down-slope from Premier Cru Champeaux. Leroux loves the 'Côte Saint-Jacques' for the excitement it brings to the wine. The grapes are fermented with 40 – 50% whole clusters to deliver this substantial, satisfying result.
