Jancis Robinson MW 16.5/20

58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot. Aged for 18 months in new French oak barriques.

Much bluer than Sassicaia – purplish crimson. Very distinctive nose with really aromatic notes of a fine Bordeaux sorry!). Sweet and sleek but with slightly perceptible oak on the palate. And then something a little green on the finish.

The 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso is a very beautiful wine, but also quite a departure from the style that made it famous years ago. Readers will find an especially polished Guado al Tasso, a wine emphasising finesse more than power. Silky tannins wrap around a core of black cherry fruit, liquorice, spice, mocha and new leather. Bright, saline undertones extend the exquisite finish.

There's more Cabernet Franc in the blend these days, and that very much comes through in the wine's crazy aromatic presence and feel. The 2021 spent 16 months in wood, three months in used French oak barrels during the malolactic fermentation and then 14 months in barrel 80% new) for the rest of its ageing. Gorgeous.

About this wine

Bolgheri

Bolgheri

A new DOC in the coastal Maremma region, Bolgheri first rose to prominence during the 1970s with the emergence of the so-called Super Tuscan wines like Ornellaia and Sassicaia. Having won universal acclaim and selling for unprecedented prices, the authorities relented and awarded Bolgheri its own DOC. The actions of the Super Tuscans inspired a generation in Italy, even if some of the wines here have lost a little of their lustre since.
