2021 Estate Tinto, Quinta de la Rosa, Douro, Portugal

Description

The 2021 Estate Tinto, by Quinta de la Rosa, is a delightful expression of the Douro’s finest terroir. It comes primarily from the high-altitude Lamelas vineyard planted by Tim Berqvist over 30 years ago. The schist soils and extremely varied topography yield rich, full-bodied wines with remarkable acidity, minerality and freshness. The nose offers inviting aromas of raspberry syrup and plums, accented by a touch of smoky spice.

The palate is wonderfully balanced, with a lively interplay between juicy fruit, silky tannins and refreshing acidity. Matured for 12 months in French oak, the wine is elegantly structured; layers of flavour unfold with every sip. It’s approachable yet complex, with a finish that lingers beautifully. Enjoy this with grilled lamb or duck breast.

Critics reviews

50% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz, and 5% Sousão, all from La Rosa’s estate, mostly from the Lamelas vineyard planted by Tim Bergqvist more than 30 years ago. Matured for 12 months in French oak, mostly used 70%) casks. Bottled in June 2023. TA 5.2 g/l, pH 3.6.

It is a very dark colour with a purplish rim, with no sign of evolution in the colour. An explosion of aromatic dark fruit, blackberry, and damson but without obvious sweetness still shows the dark-rocky-savoury character of the Douro. Chewy yet not aggressive tannins are in the process of being resolved. If you open this now, you would need to drink it with food – though, in fact, this will probably always be a food wine. The Touriga shows not only in the colour but also in a floral note. Compact tannins, all in balance, but could do with another year in bottle to blossom. Long, finely textured finish with a fresh aftertaste accentuated by the tannins, or maybe vice versa.

Paprika, sliced chilis and cherries on the nose. It’s spicy and fleshy with a medium to full body, medium tannins and a tasty finish. Touriga nacional, touriga franca, sousao and tinta roriz.
