Description

…and now for something completely different, and this is something absolutely fascinating. These old vines are not just the oldest Mouvedre vines in the world but, planted in 1853, they are original pre-phylloxera plantings and the intensity you’d expect comes through in the wine. The nose is sweet but fresh, like cranberry juice peppered with a touch of winter spice and fresh herbs.

The palate is pure warmth, brimming with red cherry, chocolate, orange peel and toasted cloves. 18months in French oak has elevated the complexity, adding flavours of coffee beans and cigar smoke. The wine has focus and freshness and, despite being a rich wine, there is still freshness and a bright acidity. There is length, depth and moreishness.

Old vines servicing full-weighted extract, impact and a welcome savoriness. Cherry liqueur, menthol, smoked meats, camphor and polished leather. The tannins, the latticework of sanity and structure, constrain a tip into excess. I like this wine. The old vine sourcing, formidable. Yet the oak is varnishy and sweet. Local cooperage? I am scoring this with the benefit of the doubt.

The 2021 Mourvèdre Old Garden is sourced from the oldest Mourvèdre vines in the world, overlooking Jacob's Creek. Thanks to the cooler vintage, it's beautifully complex, although slightly more restrained than usual. Bright and understated, it offers up aromas of roasted meats, dried herbs and gamey/old leather over a rich vein of dark cherry and graphite flavors. The acidity is bright with great energy, and the fruit is still unfolding but promises plenty with time in bottle. Ancient vines are on display thanks to superb length, although tannins are more integrated at a young age than usual, suggesting a wine best enjoyed over the medium term.

Deep ruby and purple colours. Blood plum, vanilla bean and bresaola aromatics. Rich and ripe plum fruits fill the mouth with savoury layers of dusty earth and boudin noir. Tannins work hard to drive from the background and do it successfully, so it glides with power and focus to a very long and feathering finish.

Dean Hewitson is the custodian of the oldest mourvèdre vineyard in the world, planted in 1853. That's bonkers, right?! The aromatic profile is compelling and magnetic. There is the impression that there's something special going on here. Gentle red and dark berry fruits flow from the glass with a cornucopia of spice, dried herbs, charcuterie, clove, rhubarb, pressed flowers, leather, cedar, pepper and earth. Travels like silk, like the smoothest bearings you can imagine. Seamless. Long, woodsy, meaty and without peer when it comes to mourvèdre in this country. Superb.
