2020 Crozes-Hermitage, Au Fil du Temps, Emmanuel Darnaud, Rhône

Description

Only made in certain years and coming from a single lieu-dit, Les Saviaux, Emmanuel is particularly fond of this parcel due to its lighter but deeper soils which lend a mineral element to this wine. The ’20 is stunning with super concentrated, ripe fruit. A depth of minerality on the palate lifts to feel light and elegant in the mouth. Superb.

100% Syrah. Tank sample.

Quite different to the other wines on show from this domaine. Concentrated, dark, fleshy, oak to the fore. Nice spice and freshness on the palate. It lacks a little depth, but there is plenty of attractive dark fruit here. Mineral notes on the long finish. Good acidity. Purity and freshness to finish.

I loved the 2020 Crozes-Hermitage Au Fil Du Temps, and this beauty has everything you could want from a great Crozes. Deep purple-hued, with gorgeous dark fruits, peppery herbs, spring flowers, and background oak, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a stunning Crozes readers will love to have in their cellar. It's great today yet should evolve for well over a decade.

About this wine

Crozes-Hermitage

Crozes-Hermitage

This is the largest AC in the Northern Rhône, producing over half of the Northern Rhône’s total production. The appellation was created in 1937 with the single commune of Crozes, but today there are 11 communes. The Syrah variety is king, but Marsanne and Roussanne are also permitted (up to 15 percent). The wines vary hugely in quality and style, with the majority of the reds fairly light in style.
