This parcel is on the upper part of the hillside. In Carel’s hands, it makes for a rather ethereal and lifted expression of Mercurey. There is a surprising elegance here, with pleasing creamy, middle-weight red-berry fruit and a satisfying, mineral finish.

Grown on a stony site at higher altitude. Rich purple colour, a little more depth of raspberry fruit than the village Mercurey, crunchy tannins with a point of fresh acidity behind, the stones in the vineyard showing through. Worth paying the extra!

The 2020 Mercurey Clos Voyens 1er Cru certainly possesses more character and delineation than the Village Cru, peony and iris petal sewn into the lifted red berry fruit. The palate is very smooth with fine bead of acidity, a lovely pepperiness that might dupe you into thinking there is some whole bunch here when it was completely de-stemmed. Excellent.
