The Barolo Badarina comes from Bruna Grimaldi’s steep slopes on the east coast of Serralunga d’Alba. At 450m altitude, this is the type of terroir that is becoming increasingly in-demand and quality-focused in Piedmont. This is an incredibly compact and tightly-coiled wine, which is very impressive and detailed.
While it’s a tough nut to crack at this stage, the pedigree of this cru is undeniable. The nose is quite vertical and charming, with intense raspberry fruit and orange peel that evolve into a balsamic herbal character. The tannins are structured, but with a core of sweetness that balances out notes of black tea. This is an utterly fascinating cuvée.

Critics reviews
There is a note of dark spices, chocolate, and bark, with a red and dark berry character. The wine is full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a firm texture. It’s tight and muscular, with juicy and vivid red fruit underneath before a flavourful finish. It needs some time in the bottle.

The 2019 Barolo Badarina sees fruit from Serralunga d'Alba. The wine shows a medium-rich concentration of red berry fruit and dried cherry aromas. At the back are subtle notes of rusty nails, black liquorice and crushed rose. Bruna Grimaldi and her family make wine in their winery in Grinzane Cavour but farm various parcels across the appellation. The Badarina is often the boldest and most structured wine in the portfolio.
