2019 Volnay, Les Lurets, 1er Cru, Camille Giroud, Burgundy

Description

A dry year has again benefitted this vineyard, whose heavier soils help retain water. It’s located just below Caillerets, and it’s tempting to feel that there’s extra finesse from that proximity. Certainly, there’s weight, and complexity, too; this is a wine whose gravitas creeps up on you. At heart, it’s still a Volnay, with a gentle peony perfume.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin 89-91/100

The 2019 Volnay Les Lurets 1er Cru comes from a single parcel of 30-year-old vines. One barrel was quite reduced; another offered brambly red fruit, undergrowth and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity, and nicely focused, leading to an understated finish. Fine, although I think the Volnay Village is just as good.

Moderate reduction dominates the nose today. Otherwise, the relatively rich and more concentrated flavours display a fine concentration and an attractive texture while delivering a fine length in the slightly warm finale. This is very Volnay in basic character and a wine that should drink well young if desired.

Quite an intense mid purple colour here, with a fruit intensity to the nose. The darker side of raspberry. Very significant fruit weight, good acid balance too, a big step up from the village. Plenty left in reserve at the finish.
