2019 Pommard, Les Petits Noizons, Domaine Sébastien Magnien, Burgundy

Description

This sunny, south-facing vineyard is in the higher section of village Pommard. The 0.44-hectare parcel was planted in 1934, when it was bought by Sébastien’s great-grandfather. The prominent limestone delivers a cool, mineral line to the wine, to which the 25% whole-bunch has added a more vanilla-accented element. It remains a very sophisticated village example. Drink 2022-2030.

The 2019 Pommard Les Petits Noizons comes from 90-year-old vines. The bouquet is much more backward than the Les Perrières and demands coaxing, reluctantly revealing black fruit, sous-bois and light marine aromas. The palate is very well balanced with sappy black fruit that displays quite a strong seaweed influence, especially toward the stocky finish. It feels harmonious and yet I am seeking a little more tenderness overall.
