Jancis Robinson MW 17/20

Screwcap, much to our surprise! Tasting it blind, we’d thought it was the cork-sealed wine. More expressive and evolved. Modern idiom and fresh.

Medium to deep garnet-purple coloured, the 2012 Syrah has a great core of plums and blackberry preserves with black pepper, dried herbs and liquorice accents. Medium-bodied with a remarkable velvety and grainy texture, it offers mouth-filling pepper-laced flavours and a lively acid backbone, finishing long.

A small make of just 4,200-odd bottles of this hand-crafted pinot. It shows excellent precision and detail, delicate fragrance, blue and red fruit aromas, hints of pepper and orange blossom, some pomegranate, and an attractive, vibrant fragrance. The palate has depth and some chewy texture bolstered by oak for now. Plenty of spice and good roundness. This will settle in time.

About this wine

Martinborough

Martinborough

Close to the southern tip of North Island, some top-class, aromatic Pinot Noir is being made in the town of Martinborough, with the best rivalling good Burgundy. Just as Cloudy Bay launched a hundred wineries in Marlborough, so Dry River Wines and Ata Rangi provided the spark that lit up Martinborough. Economically the region is suited to Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
